This pub along with many others in the town have vanished, a whole way of socialising gone, that had existed for centuries only to be destroyed in less than a decade and for what reason?
I don’t frequent pubs these days but I wonder if they have as much character as the old pubs had.
My niece who is a journalist said recently that the young of today who go out socialising in the evenings do not go to pubs to meet members of the opposite sex as we used to when we were at the age of interest. It was a pleasure to finish work on Friday and when you had finished your tea, bath and get ready to go out, getting dressed up ( as we used to say) in your best clothes and head off into town for a night out at a pub or a pub disco. Maybe you would meet a member of the opposite sex, and find each other appealing and a relationship would start to develop, and possibly in time ending in marriage in a year or twos time. Those days we didn’t have to run the gauntlet of door security( except for the After Eight club) and you could walk home in piece at the end of the night. Of course there was a few unsavoury characters about but you avoided them.
How things have changed, and not for the better me thinks, but you may have other ideas.
