It’s a De Havilland Vampire T11, a two seat trainer with twin boom tails..They were a common sight over Grantham in the 1950/1960 era.

D H Vampire. Used to be Spitalgate gate guardian and was then taken up to where the testing station is now and was used as fire rescue for training to get air crew out of a burning plane.

I found the photo amongst some boxes I got here in North Essex? I copied it & sent it ‘ as Graham says’ I am sure its the “old” Guardian from the entrance to the base! & Yes !!! I had forgotten that it sat behind the lorry MOT place! thanks, Graham! even in the day’s, we used to present vehicles for testing when I was at B&B etc, used to think of what a sad ending to an Iconic bit of history! So I left Town in 2000, is it still there?

I presume this meant in 1973.
