Two men who attempted to steal an ATM from a Tesco store in Grantham have been jailed for three years.
Mohammed Khan, 36, of Great Hampton Street, Wolverhampton, and Kyle Maxwell, 29, of no fixed address and with links to Birmingham, were both charged with burglary following a brazen attack on the ATM, which is what the local community saw and heard about.
What you didn’t hear about was what our officers did that night to detain the suspects, and then investigate the case to give the Crown Prosecution Service the evidence to secure the result at court. Now, we’ll fill you in.
Our Force Control Room received an emergency call at 1.15am on 4 December last year that a group of men were attempting to break into the store, and officers were dispatched.
Maxwell was acting as lookout while Khan was part of the group attempting the break in, when he spotted a marked police car. He threw two bricks at the car causing damage to the rear offside window, and spraying the officers with glass. Luckily, the officers were unharmed.
The suspects fled the scene in a high performance black Audi estate, which had been reported stolen and had no plates, headed out of Grantham towards Corby Glen and the A1. Police attempted to stop the vehicle on the A151 near Colsterworth and more rocks were thrown at the officers before the vehicle made a U-turn and drove back along the A151 towards Corby Glen.
The stolen Audi was stopped a few miles up the road when it was involved in a collision with an oncoming specialist armed response vehicle. The police vehicle was rammed before the car lost control and ended up in a ditch. The car was being driven by a person who was not identified throughout the investigation.
Four suspects in the vehicle, which included Khan and Maxwell, made off on foot through a farmer’s field.
Khan was tracked by police dog, PD JoJo, through the field and was found in the river where he was arrested.
Maxwell managed to escape into the nearby village of Corby Glen and hid inside an insecure vehicle. Approximately two hours later, he was captured on CCTV wearing one trainer and a plastic bag over his other foot. He stole a Hyundai Tuscon, which the owner was able to track as it headed on the A1 northbound and then onto the A52 towards Nottingham.
By relaying that live tracking data, Nottinghamshire Police managed to stop Maxwell in the stolen vehicle where he was arrested and brought back to Grantham custody. He initially provided false details, but his identity was revealed following fingerprint scanner at the scene.
Throughout this whole period, officers across both forces were receiving updates via our Force Control Room dispatchers coordinating all efforts, while officers on the ground stayed in touch with each other through the radio.
Here, our detectives moved in.
CCTV footage examined by detectives showed the suspects arriving at the Tesco store on Harrowby Lane, Grantham in the stolen Audi RS6 estate with cloned number plates. Khan was seen using specialist cutting equipment, reported stolen weeks before from Mid & West Wales Fire Service, to access the ATM and cause more than £20,000 worth of damage. They were unsuccessful in accessing the ATM cash.
The lifesaving equipment crucial to the fire service was recovered from the boot of the stolen RS6 and is in the process of being returned back to them.
The Hyundai Tuscon thankfully sustained very minor damage and has since been returned to its owner.
The investigation moved swiftly and Maxwell and Khan were charged remanded into custody and pleaded guilty to the offences on
They were sentenced at Lincoln Crown Court on 29 January.
Maxwell also faced additional charges for theft, taking without consent, and criminal damage. He was given a three month sentence each for both the theft and the taking without consent, and a two month sentence for the criminal damage, all of which are to run concurrently.
