The price of meat in Grantham – a century ago

Suzanne Hewis says…

While going through a few things today belonging to my Uncle Arthur Watchorn I came across this I thought you may be interested.

The paper is not in great condition as it has been around since 1918 so these are copies.

Now in 1918 Arthur would only have been a twinkle in his Dads eye so this clearly was his Father’s (my grandad) affectionate knows as Pop Watchorn.

For the younger ones, 1-0 (one shilling) is the equivalent of 5p, 1-4 (one-and-four pence) is about 6.5p and 1-10 is about 9p

My mother when I was a very small child used to go to a butchers ( sorry don’t know which one) and get a “ rabbit parcel” which consisted of rabbit meat, onions, carrots, and potatoes. I remember my dad enjoying it. I suppose that’s what wife’s did to feed their families when large amounts of meat was out of their reach financially in the very early 1950s. I have never consumed meat even as a child so I couldn’t tell you what it tasted like, but from what I have heard some have said rabbit tasted similar to chicken, what ever that tastes like.I am in my late 60s and have never eaten meat so I am not qualified to comment on its taste.
