Ruston & hornsby workshops being demolished on London Road to make way for B&Q etc.
Allan Senior

THE final traces of Ruston and Hornsbys empire were to be swept away in 1988.
This old building was near the London Road entrance. It served as the car park for B&Q & MFI
Hilary Morgan had the buildings, including the former drawing office, to make wedding dresses. The buildings all came down eventually for redevelopment.

Top End, off North Parade, which included 31 fitting shop and packing shop had been used by Aveling Barford, but was surplus to their requirements. It was rebuilt as a builders merchants and later a trading estate.

Demolition of Ruston & Hornsby (Wiseman) factory, Station Road

Sometime after Wiseman’ s had vacated site, mid 1970’s I think, I can remember going into the large London Road building. There was to be an imminent sugar shortage, and this building was being used to stockpile. Every inch of floor space was covered with sacks of sugar several feet high.
Not sure if the shortage actually ever happened, can remember supermarkets rationed.
