Ten years since major protest held in Grantham – lots of photos

March 3, 2024 by Grantham Matters Leave a Comment

POLICE almost outnumbered protesters as two opposition demonstrations took place at lunchtime on Saturday 22nd February 2014. About 150 took part in the English Defence League’s march [protesting at plans to build an Islam Culture Centre, behind Mowbeck House, off Alexandra Road. Assembling outside the Blue Bull, Wide Westgate, the marched under close escort of police along Wharf Road. Officers were drafted in from neighbouring counties to swell the ranks up to 250. When they arrived at St Peter’s Hill for their rally, they were met by about 100 counter-demonstrators from Grantham Solidarity Network contained by police at the Avenue Road junction. Traffic was stopped along Wharf Road and St Peter’s Hill for about 30 minutes during the march. Shoppers were unable to get into or out of Morrison’s car park. Among those trapped were wedding guests on their way to Wharf Road Baptist Church. Fortunately all of the wedding guests got to church on time plus the two wedding cars were escorted through the traffic on St Catherine’s Road by the police.
