A new smartphone-based tour through Grantham is set to breathe fresh life into the town’s rich history – as well as highlighting modern landmarks and features.
It’s a free guided walk with a difference, where users can choose what to explore at their own pace either by following a set route or picking a series of highlights.
The heritage trail app, available through the usual providers, was developed with Government funding through the High Street Heritage Action Zone – funded by Historic England and SKDC.
It leads visitors around the town centre and shows historic photographs while also playing audio history, allowing users to hear the stories of the past as they walk around town.
The Leader of the Council, Cllr Richard Cleaver, said: “South Kesteven District Council is very pleased to have this opportunity to create such an exciting and relevant app, which is so widely accessible.
“Grantham’s Hidden History is always a popular trail with this route covering almost two miles, which should take around two hours if people choose the whole trail.
“The beauty of the new app is that you can dip in and out, choose to learn about only the street you are on, or pick your personal highlights to learn more about places you already know.
“This has been put together thanks to some amazing specialist local knowledge, shedding light on some fascinating local tales.”

Visitors who download the Trail Tale app free from the usual provider, can see historic photos, old maps, hear sounds from the past, learn about what place names really mean, and enjoy the sights and hospitality that present day Grantham has to offer.
The app will free people from the tour group and allow them to experience all the attractions at their own pace, in their own way, by picking a starting point, choosing a walk and setting off.
Dawson’s and Hurst’s Almshouses, the King’s School, the town’s Witham walk, Grantham House, St Wulfram’s, the story of the Blue Pig and Bee Hive inns, Middlemore House, the Guildhall and old lock-up, the three historic town centre statues, The George and the former tax office, the Conduit and Market Cross all feature.
Those who can’t get out can see and hear the trail from their own home, if they wish.
