South Kesteven District Council Planning committee have approved some works to the Tree Preservation Order trees on the former Shirley Croft Hotel site.
Cllrs Charmaine Morgan and Patsy Ellis spoke against the Tree Officer Recommendation to approve works.
The original application was granted permission to prune 5.5m from Ground height.
After debate the committee agreed to an amended Recommendation of 5.05m from highest point on Harrowby Rd saving approx 1.5m lower foliage per tree. And branches overhanging the path are only to be cut to approx 7.5ft.
Cllr Morgan said: Nonetheless, the committee failed to address my concern that according to BS standard mature and old trees should not be pruned unless absolutely necessary.
Only two trees posed any potential hazard to the highway but all trees were treated the same in the tree officers recommendation.
Another issue, not discussed on committee but which came to light, is that residents were not consulted regarding the application.
Current Planning Community Engagement policy does not require Public Consultation where Tree Preservation Order protected trees are affected. I have brought this to the attention of the new SKDC Cabinet members and Lead Planning Officer and called for this to be changed. I have been advised the matter is to be brought to an appropriate committee for Review and I will continue to monitor progress. Our communities value our trees. They should have a say.
