Queen’s visit to Grantham cancelled

November 26, 2017 by Grantham Matters 3 Comments

THERE was disappointment when the Queen’s official visit to visit the WRAF establishment at RAF Spitalgate was cancelled at the last minute.
After weeks of preparation, the visit was called off at the 11th hour due to Her Majesty suffering from a sore throat.
The Duchess of Gloucester deputised for her.
Only the planting of a Chinese tree of heaven was cancelled altogether.
The Duchess said: “The Queen has asked me to tell all members of the WRAF of her great regret at being unable to be with them.”

As always the wearing of large numbers of medals and award regalia is the norm for those with titles while those of a more common role in society pay homage, I wonder how many of those on show were indeed awarded or just acquired

Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester was the head of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force ( later the WRAF) from 1943. She worked with the Red Cross and Order of St John during WW2. My mother (ex WRAF), held her in high esteem. Her presence at an occasion such as this was entirely appropriate.
