Discovery day at canal

Duck race 2014

WITH a working World War 1 field kitchen, Dragon’s Den star, folk singing, dancing girls and quite possibly the wackiest duck race you ever did see – it was going to be as interesting, as it was fun!

Throw into this already eclectic mix – cuddly rescue bats and stalls with everything from devils toenails, snakeskin and Lord knows to bicycle bells, baskets and books – there was something to interest everyone!

Children tried their hand at making a bridge out of newspaper, duck hats and tested their reflexes at ‘Splat the Mink’.

This was the Grantham Canal Society’s Discovery Day, held at the Carpenter’s Shop Canal Depot, Woolsthorpe by Belvoir on Sunday October 12th, where all sectors of the society join together to put on this annual end of season celebration!

Narrowboat rides were popular, as were the programmed talks – ranging from how to care for poorly Hedgehogs, to books written with the aid of the spirit world…

With ‘Inform, Inspire and Involve’ as the ethos for the event – there was plenty for all ages to discover!  For the less enquiring minds, and for those whose enquiring had left them exhausted – there was homemade cake!

In all, around £1600 was raised, and being a purely volunteer organisation, with minimal expenses in putting on the event, almost all will benefit the canal – and that’s important!

Anyone interested in the many and varied volunteering opportunities, can find out more at www.granthamcanal.org

One of the unexpected guests was Amanda from Radio Lincolnshire, who was on the Sunday morning’s treasure hunt, Pirate Gold.

Amanda had solved the Woolsthorpe clue but turned up at Newton’s birthplace in error, but this was soon rectified.

She is seen here with mike in the middle of the photo taken by Bob Perkins.
