Henry Preston (1852-1940)
OUR knowledge of the history and archaeology of the area around Saltersford is largely due to Henry Preston, who worked for the Grantham Waterworks Company for 50 years.
He was responsible for many of the construction works on this site, and for the financial success of the Waterworks company.
Henry Preston was born in Nottingham and joined the company in 1879, though he had been active in the town before that, mainly teaching evening classes.
He was a famed geologist, a keen and knowledgeable natural historian and an amateur archaeologist of note.
He founded the Grantham Scientific Society in 1890 and with 11 friends gathered exhibits of all kinds and ages which formed the first museum in the town.
Mr Preston, a Fellow of the Royal Geological Society, was also instrumental in setting up the new library and museum in 1926.
He died at his Cambridge Street home.
