The following letter has been sent to the Director of the Victorian Society, by Mayor of Grantham Coun Charmaine Morgan….
Dear Mr Hughes
Grantham District Hospital, known as Grantham Cottage hospital has been neglecfed by United Lincolnshire Hospital Trust who are planning a consultation regarding the future of the building later this year. Past prolosals by the Trust have included replacing the hospital building with a car park.
The old hospital is a landmark building on the approach to Grantham from Lincoln.
It was paid for by the towns residents on land donated to the community.
Attempts to list the hospital have failed and the District Council no longer maintains a Local List arguing it isn’t necessary under current legislation.
Full details of the history of the hospital are available here:-
Since the article was written there has been further degradation as the hospital trust failed to maintain the roof in parts.
We have lost too many landmark Victorian buildings from our town including the Shirley Croft Hotel (where Barnes Wallace designed the bouncing bomb) and St Catherine’s House.
If there is any action you can take or advice you can provide it will be greatly appreciated.
Best regards
Charmaine
