Clarry Vickers from Brittany, France  says…

Clarry Vickers and Grenville Crown Cute it into peaces and sent it to Scunthorpe steel works.

It Blew its whistle for the last time as it crossed the Dysart railway bridge And a few years later Granville and my self Demolished the Bridge on Dysart one Saturday night

There were no turning back

Here’s a picture from the GM collection …

BACK in the early 1960s, engine no 63982 crossing Dysart Road bridge (no longer there – but near what is now the Dysart Shopping Centre) and blew its whistle for the last time. It was on its way to FC Larkinson’s canalside scrapyard for dismantling. The picture was sent in by Clarry Vickers, of Keats Avenue, Grantham, seen here with a welding torch beginning to cut the steel into 5ft x 2ft sections to be melted down at Scunthorpe. He was 19 at the time. The big attraction for the scrapmen was the copper firebox, which in today’s money was worth £14,000. The scrapyard was taken over by TW Ward who had the Dysart Road railway bridge dismantled one Saturday night. Mr Vickers said: “This was the end of the good old days for the working force of Grantham. “We were promised dismantling 68982 was the start of a lot of jobs – but all the other locos went to Doncaster.
