New figures have revealed hundreds of pets have been dumped across Lincolnshire this year.
There have been 676 animals abandoned by their owners since January, with horses, dogs and cats among those most commonly cast aside.
The RSPCA has condemned those abandoning animals, saying that animals are being “dumped like rubbish”.
Kelly Rivers, an RSPCA superintendent covering the Lincolnshire area, said: “Even in a nation of animal lovers, there are thousands of people out there who don’t care about their pets at all.”
RSPCA reports have revealed a collapsed dog was found dumped in a lay by near Cranwell.
The white German Shepherd, named Sasha, was found on a lay by on the A17 at Cranwell by a concerned member of the public with a note which said: “My name is Sasha, please look after me.”
The member of the public took her home and contacted the dog warden who collected her.
But Sasha was taken to a vet who decided that the kindest thing would be to put her to sleep as she had already lost the use of her back legs.
The dog warden contacted the RSPCA who launched an investigation.
Inspector Sarah Chambers said: “Although the dog owner thinks they were doing the right thing by leaving her with a note, how long would poor Sasha have suffered had she not been found?
“It also must have been terrifying for her being dumped alone with all the busy traffic passing by.”
Cost is thought to be one reason why animals are being abandoned.
