Palliative Care Award for United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust for ground-breaking hospice

September 7, 2015 Leave a Comment

A ground-breaking “hospice within a hospital” for Grantham and District hospital has been awarded a palliative care hero award 2015.

The Trust is being given this award in recognition of the patient care delivered at the unit.

ULHT and St Barnabas joined forces to pool their expertise in creating a new six-bed inpatient unit at Grantham and District Hospital – the first venture of its kind in the UK.

It opened in September 2014, and more than 153 patients people and their families have already benefitted from having the state-of-the-art facilities and specialised end-of-life care on their doorstep.

The unit is the first of its kind in the country, with patients under the care of GPs, but receive treatment from hospital nursing staff with other healthcare professionals such as physiotherapists close to hand in the hospital.

While boasting the very latest in purpose-designed facilities, the unit also brings patient care closer to nature like never before with the six en-suite rooms opening up into their own private grounds outside and sharing a sun room and picturesque courtyard.

Mandy Charles, matron at Grantham and District Hospital said, “We are delighted to have won this award. It is testament to the hard work of all the staff involved in bringing the unit to fruition. It’s a fantastic service for the Grantham community, providing the best care to patients at the end of their lives, in peaceful surroundings, close to home with the best care on hand.”

Karen Rossdale, Interim CEO at St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice, said: “The award recognises the fantastic work the teams are undertaking on the Unit providing excellent palliative and end of life care and supporting innovative care locally.”

The award will be presented to staff at ULHT on Tuesday 8 September.
