Forty-nine volunteers joined together for Grantham Rivercare’s first full group clean-up (131st) since our mini New Year’s Day clean-up along our adopted river corridor.
With the many storms and high river levels over the winter this was reflected in the amounts we collected of the accessible banks, good job they had 6 ft pickers and extendable poles.
48 hours before the day a Flood Alert was implemented, this added frustration that our river based team couldn’t retrieve known bikes and trolleys in the river, the levels drop before mid March.
In total they collected the following…
22 bags, of which 8 were bottles or cans.
69 plastic bottles, 111 cans, 39 glass bottles.
65 disposable vaping items (our largest amount collected on one pick).
Notable items include 2 trolleys, discarded metal from magnet fisherman, hoover…
They continue to record our vaping data, what is very worrying in that our current figures for 2024 is now 42.8% off that collected in the whole of 2023 (1031 items) and we are only 7 weeks in to the year.
