Rural, wildlife and heritage crime officer Martin Green says…
Dog attacks on sheep.
Yet again it has been a week where livestock owners have had to deal with the result of attacks on sheep.
Incident 80 14th May in Great Steeping near Spilsby greyhounds being walked off the lead have attacked and injured 9 sheep.
Incident 368 19th May, Castle Bytham near Stamford a German Shepherd and a Husky being walked off the lead have chased and seriously injured a sheep in a field, this ewe had previously been attacked several months ago in another field for which the owner of that dog is now being taken to court.
Farmers and other farm animal owners should not need to arm themselves to protect livestock however if a dog is worrying sheep that dog can under certain circumstances be shot and the owner still prosecuted. The police will seek in any court case to have orders put on the dog’s owner/s seeking for destruction if need be.
Finally, It is not the responsibility of livestock owners to keep dogs out, it is the dog’s owner/walker who has that responsibility.
