A record breaking number of children took part in the eighth annual Inspire+ Mini Olympics on Thursday, themed around the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

More than 1,000 children from 33 schools were in Grantham at the South Kesteven Sports Stadium to take part in a range of activities.

Every year sporting stars take part in the event in a bid to inspire young people to take up sport or to give them the drive to get even better at it.

This year was no different with five world class sportsmen and women attending including Sam Ruddock, Paralympic track and field athlete, Clive Wright paraplegic power lifter, Olympic swimmer Sophie Allen, retired Leicester Tigers forward Louis Deacon and GB badminton player Chris Adcock.

Chris Graves, Operations Manager for Inspire+, said: “This is the highest number of school children we have ever had and they have all really entered into the rugby theme. Every year it gets better and better.”

SKDC’s Business Manager for Venues and Facilities, Paul Stokes, said: “This is again a fantastic event for the children and as sponsors of Inspire+ it is great to see so many young people taking part. The venue, which is operated by SKDC, is ideal for this type of event.”

The games involved years three and four pupils from the South West Lincolnshire area that covers Grantham, Stamford and the surrounding villages together with young sports leaders running the event on the day.

The Games were organised by the Partnerships Sports Ambassadors from the district’s secondary schools.
