Major Melton Mowbray road to close with traffic diverted to A1

May 30, 2024 by Grantham Matters Leave a Comment

A major road west of Grantham will be closed for eight weeks to allow a new roundabout to be built. The A606 Burton Road to the south of Melton Mowbray will close completely between 7am on Monday, July 1, and 7pm on Sunday, August, 25, says Leicestershire County Council.

It will be closed between Cross Lane in Burton Lazars and Kirby Lane in Melton to allow for a new roundabout to be built for North and East Melton Mowbray Distributor Road (NEMMDR). The council said it will be installing traffic monitoring cameras at Little Dalby to deter traffic, “particularly HGVs”, from

This comes after the council said “some cars and HGVs” ignored diversions and used rural routes through small villages when the A606 Burton Road was previously closed in January for two weeks. The council said other measures such as “local temporary weight restrictions” and 30mph speed limits will be in place.

The county council, and contractors, Galliford Try, said partial lane closures were ruled out on Burton Road because excavations of more than 1.2m deep are required to completely remove the existing road under and either side of the new roundabout. The council said access for pedestrians and cyclists will be available throughout the closure and temporary lights will be put in on the section through the construction site.

The A606 Burton Road carries around 10,000 vehicles a day into the south of Melton.

After it was initially closed in January, one parish council said the closure would cause “chaos” on village roads in the area and urged the council to reconsider. However, Leicestershire County Council said due to the scale of the bypass, one of the biggest road projects ever undertaken by the authority, some disruption on existing roads was “unavoidable”.

The council has since said that some cars and HGVs did ignore official diversion routes and that this time more measures have been put in place to deter motorists from using village roads. It said there will be “close liaison” with emergency services and public transport operators, local temporary weight restrictions and 30

It also said a temporary taxi service will be provided for access to primary health care and shopping to replace regular bus services and that, following the closure, the county council will survey local diversion routes and repair any damage. It also said there had been “special briefings” with district and parish councillors.

Janna Walker, assistant director at Leicestershire County Council highways, said: “We’ve listened to what people have told us about the previous closure, so we’ve put additional measures in place. If we do become aware of HGV operators ignoring the official diversion route and driving through small villages, we’ll pass on the information to the police.

“We’re giving as much notice as we can about the road closure so people can plan and start to familiarise themselves with the diversion routes, for example.”
