Children and professionals explored an old woodland to find a bumper crop of fungi, including two new kinds not seen here before.
Following the recent damp weather, members of West Kesteven Wildlife Watch and RSPB Explorers had bumper finds of fungi on a hunt in Twyford Woods, near Colsterworth, on Sunday.
The experts are still checking the details of some specimens, but it is likely to go over the previous record of 92 species found in just one morning.
Around had around 40 people were split into two groups.
Jane Ostler and David Feld led the Wildlife Watch Group and RSPB Explorers and Vin Fleming led the group of biologists, members of the Society of Biology, the national professional body for Biologists.
Leader, Marianne Overton said: “Even after many years of observation, nature still springs surprises.
“We were especially excited to find two species new to the woods, a Jelly Fungus and the Magpie Inkcap. We were also thrilled to also find a glow-worm, resting beneath a toadstool.”
The Woods formed the filmset for Dr Who and the airfield and was home to the American Airforce during the Second World War.
This Forestry Commission 480 acres of woodland with meadow rides and clearings, includes a good variety of undisturbed habitat so it has a wide range of fungi and indeed, is also known for its butterflies in the summer.

The West Kesteven Wildlife Watch and RSPB Explorers group forms the junior part of the Trusts and is aimed at children aged 7 – 13 yrs. The group welcomes new members. At monthly events, we enjoy discovering our local wildlife.
