The Engineering department at Grantham College has been the grateful recipient of a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine donated by Autocraft Drivetrain Solutions.

The machine, which measures approximately 20 square metres, was delivered to the college at the end of July.

It was donated due to Grantham College’s participation in South Kesteven District Council’s Engineered in Grantham scheme, of which Autocraft are also a part of.

CNC machining is a manufacturing process to remove layers from a stock piece, controlled through software input.

Grantham’s roots in engineering can be traced back to Richard Hornsby, who died in 1864 and whose work on agricultural equipment helped Lincolnshire farmland become profitable.

Head of Curriculum for Engineering, Theresa Cope said having the CNC machine would be a “big support” as the college aims to support the industry in Grantham.

She said: “It would be very difficult to implement the industrial standard in a meaningful way without the machine.

“Grantham College would like to kindly thank Autocraft for their donation and valued support, which has enabled us to support and train the manufacturing apprentices of the future.”

Engineering Lecturer, Andrew Gray added: “The machine will benefit all the manufacturing companies in Engineering in Grantham who send apprentices to Grantham College.”

If you’d like to learn how to use a CNC machine and join the Engineering industry, sign up to one of the college’s Engineering courses today.

With courses from Level 1 all the way through to Level 5, there is something to suit everyone. Click here to read about the offer or call on 01476 400200 to enrol!
