Hand, William –  Started work aged 10

 William Hand (1865- 1939)

WILLIAM Hand was the eldest son the late Richard Hand, who was bandsman in the 2nd Volunteer Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment.

He began work aged 10 with R Hempstead and Co, boiler makers on Dysart Road.

He then crossed the road to work for Grantham Boiler and Crank, from where he joined  Richard Hornsby and Sons, where  he remained until leaving town in 1908.

He then joined the Butterley Ironworks Company, of Ripley, Derbyshire, and continued there until his retirement.

On the death of his wife, he returned to Grantham and lived with his daughter in St Anne’s Street for several years.
