Grantham’s first Air Cadets

July 1, 2023 by Grantham Matters Leave a Comment

THESE boys and girls were members of of the Grantham 47F Air Training Corps and the Girls Venture Corps during the Second World War. Grantham’s ATC was one of the first 50 to be formed, in February 1941 taking over from the Air Defence Cadet Corps. While the Girls Venture Corps was separate, they occasionally collaborated as in this picture. Taken in 1943/44, they combined to put on a show called Blue, White and RAF Blue. Harold Ebb, of North Parade, Grantham, who brought it in, said: “The picture was taken by a girl from the Journal using powder flash.” Although he cannot name the girls, the boys are, from left, Harold Ebb, Jon Hook, ? Howlett, Vic Hutchinson, Fred Bramley and Sidney Beacham. They met in the house next door to the post office on St Peter’s Hill, which was demolished in about 1972 when the new post office was built. From Mr H Ebb
