Grantham MP Gareth Davies has welcomed the Government’s announcement today that the process for pensioners getting access to free TV licenses is to be made easier and quicker.
Through reforms laid in Parliament today, the administrative burden put on eligible over-75s when applying for a free licence will be eased, taking away the requirement to obtain paperwork for the application.
Currently, eligible pensioners have to obtain and share documents with the BBC in order to prove that they receive Pension Credit. Instead, under these new plans, the BBC will be able to automatically verify whether someone who is applying for a free TV Licence is on Pension Credit with the Department for Work and Pensions.
Consequently, most of the 7,000 people who apply to TV Licensing for a free licence per month will simply need to apply online or over the phone, but without any need to supply additional paperwork.
Gareth said: “I’m delighted by this move by the Government, which will support eligible pensioners who could be struggling with the cost of living to claim their £159 annual saving both more quickly and more easily.
“This will ensure that more pensioners access the support that they are entitled to, without having to go through an unnecessarily complicated application process. It’s great to see support from the Government going where it’s needed with the minimum hassle for those who are eligible for it.”
