Years of low investment in the local colleges and education has resulted in the mid tier skill shortage which has made us less competitive in the manufacturing markets. The push to get every one a useless degree has left a massive hole in the mid level skills market.

Hey up all back from my hols and refreshed and ready to crack on!
Engineering like many of the traditional industries we had in this country suffered from as Jamie c say from massive under investment, both in money and talent. we used to have things called apprenticeships which lasted either 5/6/7 years depending on your particular trade. Nowadays you can become a bricklayer in six months,
Working with your hands is seen as somewhat old fashioned today, and we are paying the price for that thinking, after all not everyone can become a pop star and have fifteen minutes of fame.
Perhaps a return to old fashioned thinking may be just the thing we need before we lose the knowledge to perform these skills for good.
