Grantham Market in the 1980s

June 19, 2018 by Grantham Matters 3 Comments

This man in Grantham market drew big crowds selling china as a great entertainer.
His name is Brian Halket, from Stoke-on-Trent whose son Jason took over when he retired.
His pitch was always outside Hop Sing’s Chinese restaurant.

Like you I remember him and his stall well, did not know his name but remember his gruff voice, and him banging his stick on a box to make a sale, he knew how to work a crowd. I bet that there is meant a house in Grantham with items bought from his stall. Another one to remember was Compton’s carpets next to the market cross. He knew how to flog you a bit of shag pile.
