Freeman, Levi – Levi was a drummer – but wasn’t into music

Levi Freeman (1871-1939)

LEVI Freeman was a professional footballer, mainly in non-league soccer.

In his early days he was a prominent figure soccer circles

Apart from Grantham Rovers, he played with Hyde, Gainsborough Trinity, Kettering, and Leicester Fosse (later known as Leicester City).

In the course his playing career, he played in every position except goal, although his best berth was inside-left.

While was with Grantham the team won the Kettering Cup three years in succession and various other competitions.

At the time he was with Hyde Mr Freeman was member of the team which met  Preston North End, then described as The Invincibles, because their great achievements.

After season in the ranks Leicester Fosse, who that time participated in the Midland League, deceased returned Grantham Rovers, and remained with them until the end of his playing career. Levi and his brother Walter Freeman, were with Grantham Rovers at the same time and played together for a several years.

Walter was left-half and captain and when associated with Grantham Town he also skippered that team.

Levi was born in Oxford Street, and lived in Grantham most of his life, ending his days at Greenwoods Row with his brother Walter.

Educated at the National School, Castlegate, he followed the occupation of a drummer in the blacksmith’s shop of Richard Hornsby and Sons, continuing his service when the firm became Ruston and Hornsby. He was employed in that capacity 50 years.
