Arthur Flatman MBE (1896-1954)

A NATIVE of Norfolk, Arthur Flatman came to Grantham through the RAF, in which he served for 36 years, retiring as a warrant officer.

He started his service career in the Coldstream Guards on the outbreak of the First World War and he transferred to the RAF at the end of it.Flatman, Arthur

He served in many parts of the world and for 11 years was stationed at RAF Spitalgate, having previously been based at RAF Newton where he was station warrant office.

Among his trophies were the MBE, the Mons Star, and Long Service and Defence medals.

He was a member of many organisations in the town, including the British Legion, RAOB, Old Contemptibles’ Association, and the Conservative Club.

He was also popular among Service lads for his entertaining ability. At one time he controlled several bands, and could play any instrument in the orchestra, although he usually played saxophone.

In his final two years, he worked at Peascliffe gun range, near Belton.

He died there after conducting some members the local Home Guard around when he complained a pain in the chest, and collapsed and died soon after.
