The new-formed British Railways undertook exchanges in 1948 in order to compare and evaluate performances of locomotives in order to dictate locomotive development.These were known as Locomotive Exchange Trials.This is why we see ex-Southern Region Merchant Navy Class 35019 “French Line C.G.T” at Grantham station, being driven by Nine Elms enginemen George James and George Reynolds.

    Wow! I knew this happened, but to see a picture of it in Grantham!!!!

    By the way, note the Stanier tender (LMS). This was fitted because the Southern Railway didn’t have water troughs, so the loco.’s own tender didn’t have a water scoop fitted. For operation on lines with troughs, it gave a lot more flexibility (and reduced disruption to other traffic) to attach a tender that permitted use of the troughs. Quite an unusual combo.!
