Elliott, Charles – Singer could play any stringed instrument

December 11, 2013 Leave a Comment

Charles Elliott (1852-1903)

CHARLES James Elliott was in the Goods Department Grantham Station for more than 30 years, rising to the position of chief accounts clerk.  Six years before his death, he was promoted to chief goods clerk the Great Northern Station in Peterborough.

He had lived in Grantham most of his life before the move to Peterborough.

He was a vocalist and musician, Philharmonic Society from its inception, and prior to that was associated with the Grantham Vocal Society.

He possessed a good baritone voice, and could play any stringed instrument, his favourite being the viola.

At Peterborough, he belonged to the Orchestral Society, of which Dr. Keeton, organist at the Cathedral, is conductor.

He suffered from Bright’s disease before his sudden death. He died at the Peterborough home he shared with his sister.

He was buried in Grantham, the body being conveyed free by the Railway Company, and was met at the station by the hearse and mourning coaches, for conveyance to the cemetery.
