Do you know these Grantham workmen?

January 24, 2020 by Grantham Matters 1 Comment

TAKEN in about 1980, these lads were working in John Bullen’s scrapyard, later called Lincolnshire Processed Scrap Metal The company is still going strong, next to the former telephone exchange in Inner Street. In these days of recycling, it is ironic there are fewer such companies now than in the ‘wasteful’ 1950s, when companies such as Charles Spick, Larkinsons and George Drake also flourished. From left are, ‘Rabbit’, Steve Bavister, Mick ?, Vic Davenport, Jimmy Dowall, Jim Ablitt, Bob Gaskin & Keith ‘Dinger’ Bellamy, From Mrs Bavister

hi there I remember the George hotel very well it was a sad day indeed when they ripped the heart out of it to become a shopping centre, which sadly never became of any use to anybody, but I do remember it very well from the time I was in a great Grantham rock & roll band called the ZIMMERS as one day we took over all of the centre ,set it up with tables and chairs etc on both levels for people to eat,it was a all ticket event which we sold out very quickly, it was all for charity ,we had our friend who was in charge of the grantham college at the time on a running machine so people could guise how far he had gone, and us the ZIMMERS played all night to the guests, we made a lot of money for our runner friend who added it to what he had been sponsored to run in the London marathon ,so doing made a great amount for the local childrens charity, a great night for every body, I have a picture of us in the group but sadly cannot find where to add it to the message, Bryan Pearce ( Cyprus)
