Cullen, Frank – A life of learning

November 21, 2012 1 Comment

Frank Cullen (1903-1964)

BORN at Harrowby Road, Grantham, and educated at the King’s School, Frank Cullen spent his adult life in education.

He was a teacher at the Boys’ Central School under Sammy Thorp, then took the headship at Ancaster, returning to the town in 1945 as head of the Boy’s National School.

In 1960, the two National Schools merged with Frank at the helm. He was there for four years up to his untimely death.

He lived in Brook Street at the time.

A keen sportsman, he was captain of Grantham Cricket Club, a former player with Grantham FC and a member of Belton Park Golf Club.

He was keen that children took up sport and was treasurer of Grantham Schools Sports Association.

As a Freemason, he was Master of Doric Lodge, a Past Principal of the Doric Chapter, a founder-member of William Peter’s Lodge, Past MWS of the Maguncor Rose Croix Chapter and a member of St Wulfram’s Mark Lodge and of the Heneage Preceptory.

He was also a member of the Town and County Club.

He was a former church warden at St Wulfram and a member of the parochial church council.
