Changing face of Watergate

March 14, 2018 by Grantham Matters 2 Comments

Watergate in 1903. On the left (with shop blind) is haberdashery Whipples which burned down in 1918. You can see the gap in the second picture.

Watergate, in 1923, with Dr Shipman’s House far right.

AN ambulance was badly damaged in 1955 following a collision with a lorry in Watergate. No one was hurt
But it is not the accident which makes the photograph interesting, so much as the buildings which were pulled down to build Key Markets superstore (later Gateway and Lidl).
Harrisons began as an osier company although when this picture was taken, it also sold toys, prams and suitcases.
Even the Co-op was bulldozed for the development.

Can I get copies of the first two pictures? My grandfather had a butchers shop opposite whipples garage. I have no picture of the shop and this is the closest I have seen. Thanks
