Blue plaque for former WPC

DEPUTY Chief Constable Heather Roach is going to unveil a Blue plaque on the wall of the old police cells at St Peters Hill, on Sunday afternoon.

This is to honour Pc Edith Smith, who lived in Rutland Street, and in 1915 became the first UK woman police officer given the power of arrest.

A film company is making a 90-minute programme for the BBC to be screened next year to mark a 100 years of women in the police force is covering the unveiling and  in the streets where Edith patrolled.
