Grantham Dramatic Society’s next production will be an adaptation of the TV sitcom Blackadder Goes Forth.
The show will be on stage at the Guildhall Arts Centre, Grantham, from 26th to 29th November, and is set in the trenches of the First World War.
The production was planned to commemorate 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War, and is a story of both great comedy and poignancy. A celebrated sitcom of the 1980s, Blackadder Goes Forth sees Captain Edmund Blackadder trying to find a way out of the trenches and back home to Blighty. Assisted by his inept pals Baldrick and George, Blackadder comes up against sneering Captain Darling and blustering General Melchett before facing the final big push.
“Blackadder is still such a funny character,” said the play’s Director Helen Pack. “But in this play we get to see other sides to him.
“It’s a hilarious script, making the most of Blackadder’s sarcastic wit, but it has its moving side too as the characters famously prepare to go ‘over the top’.”
The show has a similar feel to recent hit Calendar Girls, in that it blends moving subject matter with the best in comedy.
“I’m so proud of our cast who handle both aspects of the story brilliantly,” commented Helen. “In rehearsals we’ve laughed and we’ve cried; this will definitely be a show we’ll remember for a long time.
“Technically it’s a challenge, and our crew are doing a fantastic job in taking TV scripts and transforming them into a stage show.”
To underline the respect the Society has for remembrance, all proceeds from the raffle will go to the Royal British Legion and Poppy Appeal products will be on sale.
The licence fees from the production also benefit Comic Relief, author Richard Curtis’s charity.
Blackadder Goes Forth will be on at the Guildhall Arts Centre in Grantham from Wednesday 26th to Saturday 29th of November at 7.30pm nightly.
Tickets are on sale now and, as always, GDS offers cheaper tickets for the opening night to help as many people as possible to see the show.
