Want to know more about how Grantham’s historic town centre has been transformed through time?

A new immersive ‘sound walk’ with local people guiding you through the ever-changing streets has been created to help visitors do just that.

By popping in your earphones and listening on a web-enabled device, the magical sounds that capture the town’s unique identity are delivered whenever it suits your schedule.

The initiative launches on 10 September and was commissioned by Historic England as part of a national programme of arts activities running parallel to SKDC’s High Street Heritage Action Zone Programme. Grantham was chosen as one of six towns nationally to participate in this celebration of the town centre.

SKDC Cabinet Member for Culture and Visitor Economy, Cllr Rosemary Trollope-Bellew, said: “In this ever-more frantic and non-stop world, it’s good to take a moment to slow down, pause and experience our local area in a new way.

“The new sound walk is called ‘Traces and Echoes: Resounding Grantham’s High Street’ and explores how Grantham’s high street – a place for social and cultural exchange through the centuries – has transformed over time.

“Artist Sandra Kazlauskaite and photographer Emilie Nunn have developed this project, with support from SKDC, InvestSK and other partners to encourage visitors and residents to explore some hidden, buried, wonderful, imagined stories and memories of Grantham.”

The voices on Grantham’s Sound Walk recording are residents from local community organisations including Daybreak, Grantham Civic Society, the Blind Society and Positive Futures.

The self-guided Sound Walk for Grantham – and other towns – can be accessed online ready for September’s Heritage Open Days via:

High Street Sound Walks is a commission by Historic England, National Trust and Heritage Open Days with support from the players of People’s Postcode Lottery and produced by Sound UK. It is part of the High Streets Heritage Action Zones Cultural Programme, led by Historic England.
