Another popular Grantham shop

April 15, 2019 by Grantham Matters 1 Comment

Christopher Watkin says…. In the picture – taken in we think the early to mid 1930’s is William Watkin (1st generation Watkin Butcher) – the chap with the Germanic mustache in the middle (and my Great GrandFather) and the lady in the wavy blond hair standing next to him is Great Grandmother. My Grandfather (Phil) is standing under the door (the tall one) and he is the 2nd generation Watkin’s (standing alongside his Brother Louis who took over the Watkin’s in London Road)

Fantastic photo full of atmosphere, Glad to see that the traditional shops and those well known characters who owned or ran them are represented.

Sadly they are slowly but irreversibly vanishing from the streets and not only in Grantham.

I doubt in years to come if many of the big multi chain nationals will have photographs of such poignancy
