St Wulfram’s Church music department, in collaboration with Professor Magnus Williamson (Newcastle University), a leading historian of church music, has prepared an online presentation ‘Chanting for Candlemas’. The project is now live on the St Wulfram’s Grantham and St Wulfram’s Church Choir, Grantham Facebook pages, and will then be streamed on YouTube. The presentation gives historical information about the Feast Day of Candlemas, celebrated today, and the liturgical and musical tradition of the Candlemas processions. Dr Tim Williams, our Master of the Music, has worked with Professor Williamson to explore performance traditions and source material for Candlemas sacred music in the Tudor era, and has used virtual methodology to engage the senior choristers, youth choir and adult singers of St Wulfram’s Church Choir in this educational project. The project has involved a high degree of experimentation in methods for reconstructing plainsong and chant, with all singers able to synchronise with each other by digital means. The music in the project is as follows: Hail gladdening light, by John Stainer (1840-1901)Lucem tuam, by John Redford (c1500-1547) The Nunc Dimittis in Plainsong, as found in a 1545 ProcessionalQuod Chorus Vatum by Thomas Tallis (1505-1585) Members of the congregation light candles from their home during the Nunc Dimittis. The project is also available directly by CLICKING HERE. |
