Students from the Grantham Kumon Study Centre were recognised at an awards ceremony on Saturday for their success and continued development academically and personally in studying the Kumon Maths and English Programmes. Kumon, the leading supplementary education provider in the UK and worldwide, has been in the UK since 1981 and the Grantham Study Centre has been open since February 2016.
Centre Instructor, Ros Collins, and the Mayor of Grantham, Councillor Adam Stokes, presented students with their certificates for their achievements in completing Kumon levels and for accomplishing ASHR (Advanced Student Honour Roll) status – in other words, studying work above their school grade. One student, Aleeza Yahya, (shown in photo) was also recognised for reaching level G in Maths while still in primary school, a landmark milestone for Kumon students. At this level, children are introduced to higher level maths which includes algebra, functions and graphs. Algebra takes maths into a world beyond arithmetic and is used in many fields such as science, engineering, computing and economics. The Mayor also spoke of the importance of education and giving opportunities to children to learn for themselves.
Daily study of the Kumon programmes requires dedication from both the student and their parents and the Award Ceremony was an opportunity to not only reward and celebrate the students’ achievements but to also thank parents for their ongoing commitment to their child’s Kumon studies.
After the awards ceremony, local families attended the centre to find out about the one week Free Trial which is on until the end of September. Ros Collins, said: “It’s great to see new students gain confidence and independence in their studies. Kumon really helps students learn to problem-solve, use their own initiative and helps them develop a positive attitude to learning. It’s wonderful to see students progress academically, as well as learning new skills, and I’m pleased to welcome new families to Kumon courtesy of our one week Free Trial.”
