Wood, John – Chemist who discovered his voice

John Wood (1934-2018)

John Wood was born in London but his family moved to Grantham when he was three.

He was a pupil at the King’s School.

After qualifying at University of London with a chemistry degree , Mr Wood joined British (originally Bellrock) Gypsum at Staunton-in-the-Vale, near Long Bennington, in the laboratory, becoming chief chemist.

He then moved to the East Leake Works.

He married Sylvia in 1963 and they had two children and six grandchildren.

He continued to live in Grantham throughout and was an enthusiastic singer. Over the years was a member of Grantham Choral Society, Grantham Singers, the Sunday Singers, St Peter’s Hill Players and Grantham Operatic Society.

He died in 2018 following a protracted illness.
