MEMORY LANE
I took a walk down memory lane
With hope they were the same
Those thoughts still hidden in my head
And most without a name
In Wyndham Park, my days of youth
Now jogged and poked my past
Those fun filled days of yester-year
That somehow could not last
The swimming pool, although still there
Was now a boating lake
The bandstand with the coloured glass
That vandals soon would break
The mighty tree next to the green
Where bowlers used to play
Had perished many years before
Cut up and dragged away
The clubhouse now was new and clean
With tables, chairs, outside
Next to a childrens playing ground
Where kiddies still could ride
My walk along the river bank
Saw things completely new
With trees and bushes grown so tall
They blocked the river view
The cinder path that I recalled
Through fields of swaying green
Was paved and fenced, looking so new
Not like it should have been
At least not in my memory
Of happy days gone by
It’s hard to re-adjust to change
No matter how I try
It really looks, to modern eyes
That progress has been made
But I prefer my yester-year
And how it should have stayed
