Women halt bypass work as their home is in the way

November 2, 2017 by Grantham Matters Leave a Comment

Women refuse to move for new village bypass
WORK on the £10,000 Caythorpe bypass came to a halt when two women refused to leave their home which was in the way.
Mary Anne Scott (87) and her daughter Elsie May (60) lived in the house which prevented contractors from linking it up with the Grantham-Lincoln road leaving the bypass just 40 metres short.
They had been offered a council house but Miss Scott retorted: “Why should we pay an extortionate rent out of our pensions?
“We intend to remain until a suitable offer is made, even if it means staying here while they demolish our home around us.”
Mrs Scott denied claims by Kesteven County Council that terms had been agreed three months earlier.
A West Kesteven Rural Council spokesman said: “We offered them a house, but apparently it was at the wrong end of the village. There was little more we could do.”
