Who remembers this Grantham store?

BEFORE the days of supermarkets, most groceries were bought from either the corner shop or the larger stores such as Liptons and International Stores.
The stores always had a wooden (later glass) counter with shelves in the background. Often there would be a bacon slicer where rashers were sliced off the hank and sugar was weighed in front of your and poured into a plain blue bag.
Only the staff handled the goods until they were paid for.
The supermarket put paid to all that
This is Melias, which once stood which the Market Place the takeway next to Gravity now occupies. It was taken in February 1953
 from left, Christa Tooke, Mary Sharp, Sheila Clarke, and manager John Seymour.

    A proper shop with service, today you can go into a supermarket fill your troller from the shelves go through a self service check out, shove your money into the slot, pack your own bags and never speak to a single person, Bloody marvellous.
