Who remembers the RBL club?

May 1, 2017 by Grantham Matters 1 Comment

The 1958 Awards Presentation at the British Legion on Castlegate. F6 is  J T E (Ted) Woolley. I still have the pewter tankard he was given that night for being Crib Champion. I think B2 is a very young Gorodon Kirby. Can you identify anyone else?

Gwlenys Reid asks…
Does anyone have memories of the Royal British Legion Club at 2 Castlegate, Grantham? It was a popular social centrefor military personnel from the 1920s until around the 1950s.
It was a long time ago, but a GM follower or someone’s grandparents may have stories to tell.
I’d appreciate it.

    Back row: left to right
Bill Bass, Bob Cullington, George Baxter, Dave Green, Cyril Abbott, Wilf Bowles.
    Front row: left to right
Norman Curry, Alf Speechley, ?, ?, Tiny Yaldren, Ted Woolley, Dick Welton, George Lilley.
My father is on the photograph.
The Legion was in use in Castlegate until the late 80s, possibly the early 90s.
I use to go there with my parents as a young boy. I even had my wedding reception there.
