Nutritional value of supermarket mince pies
The study found that Iceland Luxury All Butter Mince Pies hold’s the highest amount of sugar (24.6g). This is a whopping 82% of our recommended daily sugar consumption of 30g! Close behind is ASDA’s Extra Special Luxury Mince Pies, followed by Tesco Finest Mince Pies.
Meanwhile, research by consumer comparison brand Which?, crowned Asda’s sugar filled Extra Special Luxury Mince Pies the tastiest supermarket collection of the season. It was the other two most sugary mince pies that took silver and bronze place in their taste test, with Iceland’s Luxury Mince Pies coming second, and Tesco Finest third.
The pie with the lowest amount of sugar is in fact Waitrose shortcrust mince pies, holding 16 grams of sugar. Albeit, this is still over half our daily recommended amount.
Over half of supermarket branded pies list five teaspoons of sugar in their ingredients, equal to 71% of the recommended daily allowance.
Expert nutritionist Yasmin Alexander, spoke with money.co.uk to provide expert guidance for those concerned about over indulging during the Christmas- “While mince pies carry a hefty sugar load, the festive period is all about allowing yourself a bit of extra indulgence. Although this may make it tempting to skip meals due to consuming extra calories in the form of sweet treats, doing so will probably lead you to consuming more sugar overall, due to lack of filling food groups!
“It is important to still aim for three balanced meals a day containing protein and slow energy release, fibre rich carbohydrates. This will help to keep your blood sugar levels balanced and sugar cravings at bay.”

Best value supermarket mince pies
The Aldi Holly Lane Deep Filled Mince Pies are crowned the best value out of all supermarket mince pies. They weigh 61g and come in at just 13p a pie.
Lidl, who took a jab at Aldi’s Kevin the Christmas Carrot this year, price matched their direct competitor with their festive brand, Favorina. Their mince pies offer less pie for the same price though, weighing 4g less at 57g.
Contrastingly, Lidl have priced their Deluxe mince pies at just 25p a piece. These are the best value in terms of luxury supermarket own brand pies. Each pie weighs 65g in total – more than any other supermarket mince pie.
On the other end of the scale, Marks and Spencer’s premium Collection mince pies are the most expensive. The price per pie is 42p and weighs just 55g per pastry.
