Lincolnshire Police have been announced as winner of the Oscar Kilo “Protecting the Workforce” award for the introduction of our Fitness Mentors scheme.
The initiative allows staff across the organisation to access free personal training and health screenings from volunteer mentors who come from within the workforce. The mentors have been supported to attain their level three Personal Training Diploma and are able to provide a bespoke fitness programme for each individual.
Chief Constable Bill Skelly said, “I am absolutely delighted for the Force to be recognised by the Oscar Kilo team with the Protecting the Workforce, National Award. I know that all the Fitness Mentors have worked really hard to improve the health and wellbeing of many members of staff and this is a real testament to their enthusiasm and dedication. I’m really proud of all their efforts and the difference they are making to people in Lincolnshire Police.”
Lincolnshire Police have worked with the University of Lincoln to develop the process for assessment, referral and evaluation. Insp Rachel Harrison led the project.
She said, “As a team we are really proud to receive this award on behalf of the force. It recognises the hard work and dedication the team have put in to getting the scheme up and running and making it the success it has been so far. It would not be what it is without the support of Dr Hannah Henderson and her team from Lincoln University and of course our fantastic fitness mentors themselves.
“They in particular have given up their own time to gain their qualifications to ensure they can provide a professional level of support to anyone who uses the scheme and continue to go above and beyond for their mentees. The feedback from users of the scheme has been excellent. We were oversubscribed on the first day, and this trend has continued.
“We hope that members across our organisation continue to make use of this scheme and the Wellbeing Group are working on how this can be expanded so that more fitness mentors can be available across the force area. This work in part has been hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic, but as the restrictions ease around such activities, the plans can come to fruition.
“The feedback from the Oscar Kilo team is really a testament to the effectiveness of the programme we have developed as this has now been adopted by the National Police Wellbeing Service as the model for such schemes being introduced across other forces.”
