Vere Street, Vere Court and James Street were all named after the same man: James Vere (1800–1883), of a London banking family.
In the 1830s the river Mowbeck was culverted and land in Little Gonerby began to be bought up for housing. James Vere developed Vere Street, Vere Court and James Street between about 1845 and 1850.
Soon after 1851 he moved with his brother, John Vere JP, to Carlton House (now Carlton Hall) at Carlton on Trent, near Newark, a Grade II* house built around 1765 where the household included six servants. He also held land at Wymondham, Hough on the Hill, Gelston, Stubton, Conisholme and Wigtoft.
Vere Street itself ran northwards from Chapel Street to Broad Street until the bulldozers moved in during the 1960s. Premier Court now stands on the site.
