UK Google searches around Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) rose by 80% into January suggesting that many drivers are starting the new year being caught out not following the rules of the road.
GAP insurance provider, ALA Insurance has reviewed crime data from Freedom of Information (FOI) Requests to shed light on the most common driving offences in the UK.
Drawing upon data from 20 UK police forces, their findings highlight the importance of adhering to traffic regulations, from the financial repercussions of driving without insurance to the dangers of distracted driving.
Top 5 Most Common UK Driving Offences
- Speeding
- Driving without correct insurance
- Traffic light violations
- Mobile phone use while driving
- Seatbelt offences (i.e., not wearing seatbelt, no seatbelts in vehicle)
Speeding continues to dominate as the most common motoring offence in the UK, with 1,684,728 recorded incidents. However, a deeper dive into other offences paints a more comprehensive picture of the challenges UK drivers face.
Driving without correct insurance ranks second, with 60,549 offences, followed by traffic light violations (44,120) and using a mobile phone while driving (41,528). These offences highlight areas where drivers are repeatedly caught out, resulting in significant financial and safety implications.
Dawn Cranmer from ALA Insurance shares how best to avoid becoming one of these statistics.
The Cost of Not Having Correct Insurance
Driving without valid insurance doesn’t just carry legal repercussions—it’s also costly. With an average fine of £300, this offence contributed to a staggering £18.16 million in fines across 20 police jurisdictions from 2021 to 2024. Beyond the financial burden, it underscores the importance of adequate coverage.
Dawn explains: “Failing to maintain proper insurance leaves drivers vulnerable to severe penalties, increased costs, and the risk of being liable for damages in an accident. Having the right insurance policy in place protects not just your vehicle but your peace of mind.”
The Danger of Distracted Driving
Mobile phone use while driving remains a significant concern across the UK. 41,528 offences were recorded between 2021 and 2024, with fines averaging £200 per incident. Distracted driving is a major contributor to road accidents, and using a mobile phone while behind the wheel not only endangers the driver but also other road users.
Dawn highlights the importance of maintaining focus on the road and utilising hands-free technology if necessary.
“Mobile phone usage while driving is not just a legal infraction but a direct threat to safety on our roads. The numbers are a stark reminder that even a momentary distraction can have severe consequences.”
Brits Get Caught Out on the Basics
While more dramatic offences often make headlines, simpler infractions like traffic light and road sign violations are both some of the most common committed by UK drivers. These offences, often caused by momentary lapses in concentration, can have serious safety implications. This highlights either a trend of careless driving or a need for a refresher on The Highway Code.
A Financial Incentive to Keep Your Car Clean
Making the top 20 offences, car cleanliness infractions are surprisingly common. Having an obscured plate, dirty exhaust, windows or mirrors could land you in trouble. This should serve as a reminder that vehicle maintenance isn’t just about mechanics but also visibility and compliance. Fines for a dirty reg plate can reach £1,000 and are easily avoidable with regular checks.
Dawn advises, “Simple maintenance like keeping your number plate visible might slip your mind, but they carry both safety and legal importance, not to mention the hefty fine you could be landed with for not doing so.”
