Thousands of UK households are expected to switch off their power every day in protest at soaring
The Big Power Switch Off – a campaign where households turn off their electricity for 10 minutes – is designed to hit energy companies’ profits and urge the UK government to help billpayers already stretched by the cost of living crisis. There were calls last week to make The Big Power Switch Off a weekly event like the Clap for the NHS during the pandemic after the energy price cap shot up by 54%.https://www.dianomi.com/smartads.epl?id=3533
But now there are calls to make The Big Power Switch Off a daily event at 8pm from Friday, April 22.
Campaign organiser Karen Brady tweeted: “It’s exciting to see the collective action response gathering nationally. We’re now ready for the rinse and repeat bonanza! 8pm every day for 10 minutes blackout and resurge. Begins next Friday 22nd daily…
“People on all social media platforms and dozens of media sources are still gathering momentum for the simple, safe, legal, silent collective action protest against energy costs. We must force Gov into implementing special emergency measures to reduce energy costs now!”
Participating households are encouraged to turn off all electronic devices, even switching off all power to their homes via the main switches on the fusebox. The collective action is designed to create a sudden drop and then surge in electricity demand which creates problems for the National Grid.
