TAKEN in the Oxfordshire countryside, this is a Bristowe’s Tarvia truck resurfacing a road.
The company was based at the old Wharf and children with bronchitis would be taken up to the old tar pits there to breathe in the fumes.
On the tarbar is Harry Wright who was earning about £20 a week when the photo was taken. (A fitter at Ruston and Hornsby would have been on £8 a week).
Mr Wright worked there for 28 years but the tar and exhaust fumes led to an early death.
But the most amazing thing about this picture is the cyclist. She is Peggy Norton, Mr Wright’s sister.
When the picture was taken, neither noticed the other nor aware their sibling was in the same part of the world at the time.
